When life feels overwhelming, your energy can feel heavy too. Smudging is a gentle cleansing ritual that helps release stagnant energy, calm the nervous system, and restore a sense of balance.
This simple smudging ritual is perfect for beginners or anyone needing grounding and emotional release.
When to Smudge
You may feel called to cleanse your energy when:
-
You’ve had an emotionally draining day
-
Your space feels unsettled or heavy
-
You’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected
-
You’re entering a new phase or season
Trust your intuition, it’s always enough!
What You’ll Need
-
Sage, palo santo, incense, or an herbal smudge
-
A fire-safe bowl or shell
-
Matches or a lighter
-
Open a window or door to allow air flow and old energy to pass through
Optional: a candle, crystal, or calming music.
A Simple Smudging Ritual
1. Pause & Breathe
Stand or sit comfortably. Take three slow breaths and allow your body to soften.
2. Set an Intention
Hold your smudge and gently set an intention, such as:
I release what feels heavy and welcome peace.
3. Light Your Smudge
Light your smudge and allow it to gently smoke. Less smoke is more.
4. Cleanse Your Energy & Space
Move slowly through your space or guide the smoke around yourself. Visualise heaviness lifting and clearing.
5. Close the Ritual
Extinguish safely. Place a hand on your heart and take one final breath.
After Cleansing
Drink water, rest, and notice how your body feels. Cleansing can feel subtle, you may feel softer, lighter, and calmer.
Smudging is not about perfection. It’s about presence.
A Loving Reminder
Cleansing rituals are not meant to overwhelm you or feel like another thing to “get right.” They are meant to support your nervous system, your spirit, and your sense of safety in your own space.
If you’re craving more structure, deeper guidance, or rituals for specific situations (burnout, new beginnings, emotional release, home cleansing), I am releasing a Cleansing & Smudging eBook soon to use as a gentle companion.

Practices you can return to whenever you need grounding
Think of it as a calm hand to hold when you’re not sure where to begin.
You are allowed to move slowly.
You are allowed to release what no longer serves you.
You are allowed to make your space a sanctuary.
With love and intention,
